Essex Junction Fire Department Field Trip

Hi Families,

Today we visited the fire station.  The students learned many important fire safety tips.  They also had a chance to explore the station, get into the trucks, and try on the bunker gear.  Thanks to everyone who joined us today!

Four Winds:
Last Friday we learned about leaf eaters.  Some animals make holes, some scallop edges, some roll the leaves into tubes to eat them.  When we watch a leaf eater feeding on a leaf we are seeing the flow of energy from the sun to the plant to the animal.  These interactions are evidence of a food chain or food web.  Thank you to Karen Hergesheimer and Adam Cole for a fabulous presentation.

Below are some pictures of our Four Winds volunteers engaging with the students to learn about “leaf eaters.”

Updates and Events

Dear Families,

Through the Fundations Program, we will be working on learning how to identify, write, sound out, and visually represent each letter of the alphabet.  I will update you weekly as to the letters we have done and the ones that are coming up.  Also, your child has been working on snap words in the classroom.  These are words we are learning in a snap.  They are also known as sight words.  We do not sound these words out, instead we recognize them by sight.  Again, I will update you as to the words the students are learning.  They have each received a ring of words for their book box here at school.  A ring of words will also go home shortly as part of the Home Reading Program.  We will talk more about this at the Open House.  Thank you.

Show and Tell!!!

Dear Families,
We have filled our class sun band jar.  We have earned a share time or show and tell as it is sometimes called.   Please have your child bring his or her share item in tomorrow, Friday, September 14th.   We will share in the afternoon.  These items can include special toys, stuffed toys, books, pictures, and so on.  Please limit it to one item and consider leaving the really valuable or sentimental things at home as I would not want anything to happen.  Thanks so much.  This is super exciting!

Recycle Rhonda!

Today we had a very special guest from The Chittenden Solid Waste District.  Recycle Rhonda is a popular visitor here at Summit Street School.  She came into our  classroom to talk about what goes in the trash, the recycling bin, or the compost bucket, especially after we finish our snack.  She will return a few times this year to continue to teach us about how to reduce, reuse, and recycle.

A Guest Reader

Today Mrs. G visited our classroom to read her favorite book.  She read A Fine, Fine School, written by Sharon Creech and illustrated by Harry Bliss.  We enjoyed the story very much and we loved having our principal as a guest reader!
