Winter Break Challenge

Dear Families,
We have reached another school vacation!  Today the students took home a folder or envelope with books inside.  They should not return home reading books tomorrow. Please encourage your student to read over the break.  In this folder, you will find multiple books for reading.  Students are obviously not limited to these books, but are encouraged to read many different kinds over the break.  We have provided a winter break challenge for the students that includes such things as writing numbers and practicing snap words.  Students are encouraged to color in one mug for each activity they complete. The challenge sheet should be returned with the books on the first day back.  Students participating in this will receive something special.  Thanks for all of your help with this and Happy Reading!

Updates and Events

Dear Families,
We have been doing some very important work in math and science.  The students have been recording observations in their science journals about the characteristics of living and nonliving things.  We also had a fabulous Four Winds presentation about decomposition specific to rotting logs and what is living inside them.  Students were given the opportunity to explore and investigate rotting logs and collect important evidence.

In math, we have been learning about the importance of number lines.  With a number line as support, students practice counting the forward and backward sequences. This also helps students understand interval counting and allows them to practice using positional words such as before and after.

Updates and Events

Dear Families,
Today we had to say good bye to our UVM intern, Autumn Albrecht.  She was a fabulous addition to our classroom and will be greatly missed.  The students gave her a handmade desk calendar and cards.  She chose two books to donate to our classroom.  Also, each student received a special note and a hand selected pencil.  There was an assembly this morning to recognize all of the interns in our building.  They were each given a certificate of appreciation and a Summit Street School shirt. Below are some pictures of Miss Albrecht's last day.  She will be starting full-time student teaching in a fourth grade classroom in Colchester after the first of the year.  We wish her well!  We will also be having a full-time student teacher from UVM starting in January.  Her name is Mariah Gentley.  She has been visiting our classroom and will visit again tomorrow. We look forward to having her join!

Learning Challenge for Vacation

Dear Families,
The students received a Fall Break Learning Challenge in their home reading folder.  You will also notice they have more books than usual.  Please help the students keep their skills strong over break by participating in this activity. There are also some fun math ideas. For each activity that your child completes, please have them color in that leaf.  On Monday, November 26th, your child should return this to school to receive something special.  Have fun and Happy Thanksgiving!

*****Please do not have your students return any home reading books tomorrow unless they are ones they already had prior to today*****

Updates and Events

Dear Families,
Today was an exciting day as we had a chance to meet our learning buddies from Ms. Novotny’s second grade classroom.  We read our “just right” books to the second graders and they read a story book to us.  Our plan is to meet at least twice a month to connect and learn.  Today we went up to their classroom and next time they will come visit us.  Please enjoy the pictures I have posted below the updates and events.

Updates and Events

Dear Families,

We had a really great day last Friday.  We had Four Winds, chess, and the Fun Run.  The students learned all about worms and what lives in the soil during our Four Winds session.  We also had lesson number three for chess.  We had second and third grade helpers during this time.  Finally, we enjoyed getting outside and participating in the Fun Run in the afternoon.  The students ran, listened to music, and got a yummy popcorn snack.  Please enjoy the many pictures of these events below the updates portion of this blog post.

I would also like to thank everyone who came out for the pasta dinner last Tuesday.  It was so nice to see all of you.  I ran into many of you at the Book Fair.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart for donating so many books to our classroom.  We enjoyed reading many of them last week and have several more to read this week.  Your generosity is greatly appreciated!
