Winter Break Challenge and December Happenings!

Hello Families,

I hope you found the “Winter Break Challenge” in your child’s home reading folder.  Every student received up to six books in his/her folder for the break. Also included on the challenge sheet, are some math and writing activities.  The students should color each mug as they complete it and return the sheet, along with their home reading books, when we come back.  They will receive something special.
In addition, please enjoy the pictures below of some of the special events for the month of December.  We learned about predators vs. prey during our Four Winds presentation.  We also did many acts of kindness in this month.  One highlight was visiting the youngest students in our school, our Pre-K friends.  Finally, we shared time with our learning buddies and listened to the stories they created based on “Froggy” books, by the author, Jonathan London.  Thank you and have a great break. I'll see you in 2020!

Winter Gear Reminders

Hello Families,
The first snowfall was very exciting for the kindergartners.  During one of our morning meeting times, many of the students shared that winter is their favorite season.  With that being said, we want to make sure the students are dressed warmly and have all of their gear to enjoy the times they are outside.  These times include before school, recess, and after school.  There are also occasions where we may go out a second time during the day perhaps for Four Winds or another special event.  Please be sure your child has the following items:
·         A hat
·         Mittens/gloves
·         A winter coat
·         Snow pants
·         Boots
·         Indoor shoes to change into once in the classroom

Many students at Summit Street School have black snow pants and it is sometimes tricky to know whose things belong to who.  Please be sure to label everything that your child has so that we can keep track of it.  Also, your child may want to leave a pair of shoes at school to ensure they have them each day.

Finally, do not hesitate if you need help obtaining winter belongings or warm clothing for your family. Please contact us at any time. Thanks and Happy Snow Season!

Self-Awareness

Hi Families,
We have been working on self-awareness as part of our social emotional learning. Being self-aware in kindergarten includes accurately identifying basic emotions like happiness, sadness, and anger. It includes the ability to identify what you like and dislike and what you need and want. Self-aware students begin to understand how their choices have consequences and that their behavior affects other people and the environment around them. These skills continue to grow and develop as students mature, allowing them to positively respond to a variety of experiences and become strong self-advocates.  Please see the chart below. You will find a copy of the same Self-Awareness chart in your child's Friday folder that we use in class as we choose which goal we are working on with each subject area.

I have Self-Awareness

I can tell how I am feeling.
I can recognize my strengths.

I can recognize how I am still learning.

I can persevere and do hard things.

Spending Time with Our Third Grade Learning Buddies!

Friday, the students in our class and the students in Mrs. Bergstrom's class got together for learning buddy time.  They were paired up to do a  Pumpkin Glyph project.  This was an activity that was fun and also fostered the students' ability to get to know each other.  The kindergartners were so excited to go into a third grade classroom!
