Hello Families,
We have been very busy
in kindergarten. Last week, we had a fabulous Four Winds presentation on
how animals stay warm in winter. Many warm-blooded animals stay active throughout this cold season, conserving body heat by seeking out shelter or putting on extra fur, feathers or fat. We learned all about this by watching a puppet show, making our own shelters, and doing science experiments. This past Tuesday, we had a wonderful
integrated arts session with Ms. Feller to learn all about Snowflake
Bentley. We read a book about his life in Vermont and then made beautiful
one-of-a-kind snowflakes. We then had two special days with our learning
buddies, reading wonderful winter books and completing special Mitten Mystery
writing projects. Please enjoy the pictures at the bottom of this post.
Our writing unit on
How-To books is in full swing. Students have been creating books on everything
from how to make slime to how to draw shapes. We are also using our
bigger reading muscles to read bigger books during readers workshop time.
We are learning how to check our reading to make sure it looks right, sounds
right, and makes sense.
In math, we started a
unit on measurement and are learning all about length of objects. In addition to the lessons, our
math work places include games such as Beat You to 20, Foxes and Dens, and Unscramble
the Numbers. We look forward to learning
a new game with our student teacher, Ms. Gentely, this coming week. She will teach us how to play "Which Coin will
Win?"
In social studies, we
have been learning about the importance of being kind. We have kindness
goals each day including giving a smile, a quiet wave, or a compliment to
people in our school. We have also been reading great books including Most
People and Thank You, Omu! The International Pot Luck Dinner was a great event to celebrate different cultures and practice kindness.
I enjoyed seeing many families.
In science, we are
working on learning about force and motion. We have been reading many
books about it and are excited to use Keva Blocks, magnets, and balls and ramps.
We are also very excited about the opportunity to use Bee bots with Mrs. Duggan
and Mr. Davidson. We will be going to the library for special sessions in
the next couple of weeks to work with these little robots that are especially
designed for young children.
